I'll be changing the look of this site so please bear with me if it's a little wonky over the next few days.

I also apologize for the lack of posting in the past while

"No really - do I HAVE to draw from life?"

I hear this question quite a bit from aspiring artists and students. How important is drawing from a model standing in front of you?

To understand why, you'd need to understand all of the following:

Frank Frazetta passes away at 82

Certainly one of the most influential artist in my life, Frank Frazetta possessed a seemingly innate ability to render creatures and characters without reference - or even practice. Stories of him completing paintings in one night that would take others months - or possibly years - are legendary. Everything Frank touched or tried his hand at was gold. He will be missed, but his legacy as the greatest fantasy painter will remain.

I made this Death Dealer study in photoshop a month or so ago. Now I guess it can serve as sort of a homage to him.

Tattoo sleeve

This is the top part of a tattoo sleeve I'm designing for a client. The tattoo is dedicated to her family, and this first part represents her mother.

Spent the better part of Saturday at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival and had the chance to meet some great people, plus pick the brains of some illustrators I really admire. I'd like to thank Michael Cho and Cameron Stewart especially for some great insight. Great guys.

Plus I got a great sketch of Batman needing glasses from Cameron Stewart. I asked him to sketch something unusual because I figured if you're going to draw something for the 1,000th time, you might as well deviate from the norm. Plus I just dig banality for banality's sake.
