I'll be changing the look of this site so please bear with me if it's a little wonky over the next few days.

I also apologize for the lack of posting in the past while

"No really - do I HAVE to draw from life?"

I hear this question quite a bit from aspiring artists and students. How important is drawing from a model standing in front of you?

To understand why, you'd need to understand all of the following:

Frank Frazetta passes away at 82

Certainly one of the most influential artist in my life, Frank Frazetta possessed a seemingly innate ability to render creatures and characters without reference - or even practice. Stories of him completing paintings in one night that would take others months - or possibly years - are legendary. Everything Frank touched or tried his hand at was gold. He will be missed, but his legacy as the greatest fantasy painter will remain.

I made this Death Dealer study in photoshop a month or so ago. Now I guess it can serve as sort of a homage to him.

Tattoo sleeve

This is the top part of a tattoo sleeve I'm designing for a client. The tattoo is dedicated to her family, and this first part represents her mother.

Spent the better part of Saturday at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival and had the chance to meet some great people, plus pick the brains of some illustrators I really admire. I'd like to thank Michael Cho and Cameron Stewart especially for some great insight. Great guys.

Plus I got a great sketch of Batman needing glasses from Cameron Stewart. I asked him to sketch something unusual because I figured if you're going to draw something for the 1,000th time, you might as well deviate from the norm. Plus I just dig banality for banality's sake.

An inking test for a webcomic project I'm working on

Hockey cartoon

Just did up a batch of hockey cartoons for a cartoon blog I started a little while back. I think my style has come a long way and I'm ready to start making these on a regular basis.

some sketches

Gnu's & notes

Trying to push myself further each and every day. Not to sound too self deprecating, but I want my work to be more exciting. A little more like James Jean or Alex Pardee, and reveling in banality for banality's sake.

I'll be doing an RT contest art giveaway thingy on Twitter. Most likely tomorrow.

Fixing up the site + some stuff from yesterday

I'm changing the layout of this site, plus updating my portfolio gallery today so please bear with me if some things look wonky today.

I re-did this portrait

Creature concept of a mutated wildebeest. I'm not fully satisfied with the horns, they need to be completely askew and pointing in different directions to reinforce the idea that it's a deranged beast.

Dragon painting update

in progress, working on this personal port piece bit by bit whenever I get the chance.

Just a page of random sketches. Sometimes it's great to let loose and just doodle.

Quick concept of a fuzzy animal that's light as a feather.

Dragon painting work in progress. I referenced Andre Wallin's work for the pose just to have something on the canvas to work off of. I'll probably change it as I go along.

Study of Frazetta's Death Dealer

Webcomics? Hmm

I've decided to get into the webcomics game in a big way. I'm working on several strips right now, and we'll see where each one takes me. I've always been fascinated with the sequential art of Tezuka and Gibbons(& Moore) and that all-powerful line one interprets for oneself.

Admittedly, they might appear a tad unpolished or sketchy, and I'm alright with that. If it becomes a bit of a success I'll give some thought to dealing with my linework and how to ink them, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. We can't all be a Mort Drucker.

Anyway, here's some 8-bit tomfoolery I did a while back on a lazy Sunday:

Oof. I'm not keen on the composition in that 2nd one, now that I see it again. Bit of a rush job.

Speaking of webcomics, you should all check out http://www.morganpielli.com/

Let me also pose this question to fellow artists: what do you feel is most important to get right: hands or head (or other: eyes)?
